Personal hygiene, using handkerchiefs or masks, has been a direct control strategy for the coughing and sneezing that produces droplet nuclei CDC 2001. The known dispersion patterns a cough or sneeze may also travel through the airborne route, as data suggest, HVAC systems may contribute to disease transmission. Ventilation represents a primary infectious disease control strategy through dilution of room air around a source (CDC 2005). Solutions of interest include; dilution ventilation, differential room pressurization, room flow regimes, source capture, filtration, UV irradiation, or source capture ventilation. It is highly recommended the remediation plan for mold decontamination include removal of contaminated materials or employ aggressive cleaning techniques when removal is impractical.   2. No Sanitizers or disinfectants are registered for use in HVAC systems through the EPA.
  3. The product and the use must be reviewed before they are applied to a HVACsystem.More and more chemicals can have “multiple chemical sensitivity” to cleaners applied to HVAC ducts. “When used, antimicrobial treatments or coatings must be applied in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s written recommendations or EPA registration listing”, (ACR, 9.2.1).

Cleanup Methods:

  1. Adequate HVAC physical cleaning “Mechanical cleaning techniques employ sizeable vacuum collection units, portable vacuum collection units, mechanical agitation systems, hand brushing tools, pressurized air sources, pressurized water sources, plus other tools and equipment to dislodge attached particulate and debris”. ACR 6.1
  2. Cleaning Methods of cleaning are compared based on the type of debris impacted on the surface of the air conditioning coils. Type 1 & Type 2 “Air handler may have electric coil cleaning products to clean the HVAC coil” and the entire system-including duct work, coils, grills, and the central HVAC unit.
  3. Negative pressure should be used to control contaminants. “Collection devices must be used to convey and collect debris and prevent cross migration of dislodged particulate during the mechanical cleaning process.” ACR 6.1.1.
  4. Use HEPA Equipment”It is highly recommended the HVAC component being remediated using HEPA contact vacuuming also be negatively pressurized using a vacuum collection device” ACR 6.1.3.
