Study Finds Elevated Lead Exposure Risks for Children in Parts of Oakland

LA Testing provides comprehensive laboratory services, sampling supplies, and test kits to identify lead hazards from air, dust, soil, water, paint chip, and bulk materials.

A new study, commissioned by the City of Oakland’s Department of Race and Equity, has found that children in parts of the municipality are among the most likely to develop lead poisoning as compared to the rest of California. The study states that lead poisoning, caused by lead-based paints, remains a dire threat to public health in Oakland and Alameda County.

In parts of Oakland, a large percentage of homes and buildings were built before 1978. That is the year that lead-based paints were banned for residential use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust are the most widespread and hazardous sources of lead exposure for young children in the United States.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports:

Even in small amounts, lead can have harmful effects on the body, which may lead to lifelong learning, behavioral, reproductive, cardiovascular, and other health problems. While many leaded products have been phased out, lead may still be found in and around older homes and buildings, in certain occupations and hobbies, and some consumer products, remedies, and foods.

“Lead poisoning is one of the most common environmental illnesses in California according to CDPH, but it also reports it is completely preventable,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This is why testing for lead exposure risks in homes, daycare centers, schools, playgrounds, and other places children spend time is so important. LA Testing, with laboratories across California, is proud to offer environmental and material testing services for lead and other heavy metals. In addition to laboratory services, LA Testing also provides sampling supplies and even easy-to-use test kits.”
