The Malibu High School and Juan Cabrillo Elementary Schools were recently tested for environmental contaminants after recent complaints from local teachers were expressed.  Teachers have been concerned about harmful contaminants within the soil after several teachers developed similar cancers indicating the PCB’s may be the source.  Concerns arose in October when a formal letter was written to the Santa Monica -Malibu Unified School District by the teachers.  .

This weekend the areas in Malibu were tested for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) by several environmental consultants.  PCB’s and Radon were both removed from the soil back in 2010 from the main quad area.   Radon is a naturally occurring radio active gas that originates from the soil and be found in found in many buildings.  The Malibu areas have been known to emit these gases.

The Environmental consultants will have the results around the 22nd of November.  After receiving the results from the laboratory the consultants will review the standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for residential and commercial concentrations and share the results with the teachers, family, and staff.
