City Health Officials Shutter Beverly View Grocery Over ‘Serious Asbestos Risk’

BEVERLY VIEW — The city’s health department has temporary shuttered a Beverly View grocery store Friday over what health officials called a “serious asbestos risk.”

The Chicago Department of Public Health said Friday evening that it issued emergency cease and desist and abatement orders to the owner of Dearborn Wholesale Grocers, 1841 W. 79th St., “after finding conditions that posed an imminent and substantial risk to public health, safety, and the environment.”

The store must remain closed until its owner completes a city-approved plan for reopening, according to the health department.

“Protecting residents from dangerous environmental and public health hazards is one of CDPH’s most important responsibilities,” said Dr. Olusimbo Ige, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, in a statement. “When conditions create a serious risk of exposure, we will act immediately to protect the public and ensure that no facility is allowed to reopen until the law has been fully followed and the hazard has been properly addressed.”
